Five Days, Five Eggs

Five days and five eggs! We think Dottie is an egg-laying rock star! I never knew having chickens would be so exciting.

I promise I won't post photos of every egg we find . . . it is just at this point it still feels like magic!

I just had the feeling I should check the nesting box today . . . and found an egg! It is our first one. We are pretty sure it belongs to Dottie as Lucy is supposed to lay green/blue eggs and Carmela is still a little young to be laying. Go Dottie!

Children's Festival

On Monday night we went to the Children's Festival. It is put on every year (except last year when the Library was shut down) by the Jackson County Libraries. You can see pictures from 2006 here. Below are some photos of the fun!

Each year a community member is the "queen" of the children's festival. Here Maisie kneels to be proclaimed a princess.

My niece, Taylor, turned 16 on Saturday. For her birthday a bunch of family and friends went rafting . . . and then out to dinner. Her parent's surprised her with a Jeep for her birthday . . . good luck on your driving test tomorrow, Taylor!

Artichokes in Bloom

Have you ever seen an artichoke in bloom? They are surprisingly beautiful! I had no idea! I love eating them, but I did not know they would add such vibrant color to our back yard! There were so many that we did not eat them all . . . we left them on the plant and were surprised with these beautiful blooms. I took photos . . . then a few days later took more photos as they had opened even more. The photos do not do the color justice. It is really amazing . . . and there happy bees buzzing all around . . .

Henry wants to be like the big kids so much! Josh put the training wheels back on Cole's old bike so that Henry could "ride." It is more like sitting and rolling. He doesn't pedal or steer . . . but he is having fun!

The last week of June we went on a trip to the BEACH! It was LOTS of fun! We rented a house right on the sand . . . so the kids could go out the door and play. Zach, Kim, Declan, Brett, Maggie, Bridget and Julia shared the fun times with us. I took LOTS of photos. Here is the first set . . .

Independence Day Spirit

We had a nice 4th of July . . . we went to our little town's parade, then went out to my parents for a BarBQ . . . and ended up staying the weekend! It was so relaxing! I have been so busy . . . it was so nice NOT to bring my laptop and be forced to NOT work over the weekend! Here are a few pics of the kids right before the parade.

Meet Lucy and Dottie

Last night we got two new hens . . . Carmela was just too lonely all by her lonesome. We miss our three little roosters, but we are trying to get used to our new flock. Our new hens hatched in early March and we picked them up last night. They have not been held like our little chicks were, so they are a bit skittish . . . but hopefully they will get used to us too. Their names (we named them on the way home) are Lucy and Dottie. So now we have a Carmela, a Lucille and a Dorthy (Lucy and Dottie). Lucy is pretty small and she is an Araucana. Dottie is pretty big and she is a Dominique. Here are a few pictures. Like I said, they are a bit skittish, so they are hard to photograph. Sheldon is happy to have a little flock to herd around again!
