Chapter book Queen
Maisie is our resident chapter book queen. She is very proud of her strengthening reading skills and is determined to be the top reader in her class (based on number of books or chapters read) at the end of the school year. My mom gave her four new chapter books on Saturday night to read this summer, but she already had them read by Sunday evening. She will proudly tell you that that equals 80 chapters! The sad part of this story is that our county public library system recently was shut down for lack of funding . . . how will I feed the reading beast this summer?!
I am sure we will work it out . . . we are proud of our Maisie!
Maisie...we are so proud of you for reading so well! Yay Maisie!!! You Go Girl! love to you from Grandma and Grandpa
I am so sad that your library is affected by the timber dollars. We have been reading about that in the papers up here. Is there a bookmobile or something that will feed the reading machine this summer? Any exchange programs with local bookstores? I am sending you bibliophile vibes!
All the libraries closed in April. It is such a bummer. The voters have voted twice to not use taxes (property tax increase etc) to pay to keep them open. It didn't pass earlier in the year when the libraries were still open -- but I think people did not believe they would really close. Then we voted again just recently (post closures) so I was hoping it would pass, but no. Voted down again. Nothing has really come up to replace them. I hear that a few school libraries might be open on a limited bases this summer, but only for ONE hour per week. So that is not much. I guess a woman in Ashland is starting a private library -- kind of a community exchange -- but I don't know much about it. Last summer I took the kids to the library for a few hours at least 2 times a week . . . and that was before Maisie was reading much. My mom, my sister and I are on the hunt to find good used books for Maisie (and Cole) this summer. Thanks for the good vibes.
I will keep my eyes and ears open up here for other solutions for you. I just joined the board of an Oregon literacy non-profit, so I will also check and see if there is anything planned for your area. One thought - does the Medford library system have a "friends of the library" book store? We have that in West Linn and you can get books for a quarter... then when you are done, you can donate them back and they can be resold again to support the library. Might be a cheap way to support the libraries that ARE open in the area? Aaah, this is so sad!
Unfortunaly ALL 15 branches are closed. There are no libraries open in our area . . . the friends of the library book store is closed as well . . . everything is shut down, even their website.
Rosie that is just awful! Have you heard of bookmooch.com? It's a great way to do book exchanges with other families.
I hadn't heard of bookmooch.com . . . I will have to check it out. Thanks!
